History of the Wedding Favor

Favors have been a part of wedding traditions for centuries. In the beginning, the upper class of Europe would give sugar in a box called a bomboniere. Sugar, at the time, was extremely expensive and thought to have medicinal properties. As the price of sugar decreased over time, the idea of giving favors to guests spread among the middle classes as well.

Eventually, sugar was replaced with confetti, almonds coated with sugar. Eventually, these were replaced by Jordan almonds, which has become a signature wedding favor. Traditionally , 5 almonds are given in a small box, tin or wrapped in tulle, which represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness. The bitterness of the almond and sweetness of the candy coating represent the bitter-sweetness of a marrage.

Today's couples have a wealth of options available to them. One of the newest trends is plantable favors, different paper shapes embeded with wildflower seeds. Other popular items are salt & pepper shakers or a themed favor to match the reception and invitations. 1. Plantable favors is a novel idea. It seems like most people go with bubbles and candy with the occasional matchbook.
